Textured and golden
I’ll start this one off by saying I forgot to hit publish on this post back in March… so.. here goes! ;)
Luxe and layered textures, color, and shine are what this new handmade collection is all about. Exploring organic forms I created this body of work thinking about nature and the seasonal changes that make up our daily experiences and in a zoomed out way, our entire lives.
There is something beautiful and meditative about the rhythm of nature, moving seamlessly from one season to the next. The natural world and all of life accepting the unchangeableness of this change. (Something this first time parent is maybe learning about in a whole new way.)
I worked in both stoneware and porcelain for this collection. Each clay has its own “flavor” bringing a specific note to the table (why yes, that is a pun.)
I considered releasing this work as two separate collections but ultimately they belong together. In my studio I moved back and forth between the two clays, careful not to let them touch while wet. This was not at all practical or efficient, but it was what my creativity wanted.
The lack or practicality and efficiency is something I wouldn't have allowed myself in the past. I was focused, learning to fine tune my production to almost machine level consistency and logic. I can feel the tension in my body as I type that.
It's a new season for me, both in that bigger zoomed out way that nature pulls us all into, but also in the closeup details of my day to day and my creative interests.
I've been pushing the limits (1000% self imposed because I am very much self employed and have been for a looooooong time) and letting myself paint on canvas with oils AND make pottery in two different clays!! Can you believe it?! That's sarcasm but also true shock and celebration.
Good things are coming. I can feel it.
